CHAPTER FIVE
Blind Devil

<<   Page 10   >>
It had been over a day since Blind's encounter with the robbers. He had soon realized that his coak might look impressive, but it was way to hot to wear everywhere he went. So he took it off, neatly folded it up, and slid it into his pack.

      His pack?

Again he cursed himself for not being able to remember anything. Taking a short break he sat down and looked around through the contents of his pack. He soon made some startling discoveries. His pack was filled with medicines of all sorts, as well as some drugs and potions what made no sense to him: truth serum, weight loss powder, Tylenol. Where did I pick all of this up? But his last discovery was the best.

It was a simple looking device that fit onto Blinds wrist. Inspecting it more closely he found that there was a rope inside, a very thin rope, and plenty of it.

"Must be a piece of junk I picked up somewhere," Blind thought to himself. The straps that held it in place were a little tight and in turn was slowly cutting off the blood to his hand. He made a fist and then opened it to get the blood moving again. And to his surprise the rope shot out of the device and caught firmly on a rock some distance away. Closing his fist again the rope started to reel itself in. Blind was so amazed with his new "toy" that he didn't notice the rock that he had grappled onto was still attached to the rope, until it caught him squarely in the nose.

Looking back on this day Blind would note that there might be a lot of things that he couldn't remember, but a nosebleed was one of the few things that sprung to mind instantly, along with a few nasty things to say afterward.

Suddenly a vision of the future sprung up in mind. He saw himself hitting himself in the face with a rock from a new angle.

"Oh great now you start working! " He yelled at some unknown source. He had the strange feeling that there was something in the back of his head that was laughing at him. Apparently he had some time to go before getting everything in proper working order.

Blind stood up, adjusted his sword, and strapped on his pack. He tried to think of what to do next. He had no friends, no family, and no idea of who he was. Not to mention that he had no memory of anything until the last few days.

"Well," he said to himself, "It's a start." And he immediately passed out.

His sight returned. He was standing in front of some sort of council, and they did not look pleased to see him. Two of the people there were quite obviously human. The other two appeared to be elves. And the one in the middle well... Blind couldn't be sure. The spirit of Dragons Breath that usually gave him sight simply didn't show this person. There was a very visible hole where a man would be standing. Then the man spoke.

"I'm sorry about bringing you here so forcefully, but it was necessary to talk to you. You seemed to be wandering and we just wanted to point you in the correct way."

"Really," Blind said back, "and why on Earth...uh, or wherever I am now, would I trust a word you say?"

"Because, Chaos, we created you. Everything you are, your power, your strange abilities, even the clothes you wear were created by us."

"In truth," one of the humans said, "all you are is an extension of the world of Dragons Breath itself."

"But enough of this," spoke up one of the elves, "surely you have questions... simply ask them. "

Blind could only think of one question.

"Am I human?" The council exploded with laughter.

"Of course not," the man in the middle said, "and if not for the fact that your memory wasn't input correctly, you would have never noticed. You would have simply gone on with your task and that would have been that."

"Task," Blind asked puzzled, "what task?

"Oh yes of course! The task," the middle man said instantly perking up, "and what a task it is too. Oh yes, you are definitely going to have your hands full with this one. Well I'll tell you the story..well no, there's too much, I'll sum up. There is a powerful evil coming, and we need you-"

"To fight it!" Blind cut in.

"No!" The man shouted back rubbing his forehead, "You are to train those who will be fighting this evil. YOU are not to fight it at all," he breathed in deeply and leaned forward, "You are to find those of power, those with the pendants, and help them. They will be the ones fighting in the end. Now, are there any more questions?"

"Just one," Blind said, holding up his hand which now had the dried blood on it from his nosebleed, "If I'm simply a creation of Dragons Breath and not human, then how do you explain this?"

"What, that? We could have easily made you bleed gold if we wanted, but it wouldn't have helped with the task at hand." The world started to fade and shimmer slightly, Blind knew he was waking up.

"Go to the south east, there you will find a town. There are two there who need your help.

"Seek them out. You are not to fight the evil, remember that!"

Blind woke up with a headache and a pit in his stomach. The mixture of emotions and the journey he had to make were not things he wanted to wake up to. He took two of the Tylenol, picked up his pack and sword again and pulled out the leaf from his pocket. Holding it up he dropped it into the life stream of Dragon's Breath. It fell to the ground and pointed ahead and slightly to the right. Apparently the same life stream that gave him his sight and power could also point him in the right direction if given the chance.

"Well, so far everything's going just fine," He thought to himself sarcastically, "Now to find this town and get the fun started."

Blind walked for some time until he finally saw the fire. He was still a while away but he could easily tell that there was only two figures around it. A human and an elf. The human was saying something, and then he reached into his shirt and pulled out what appeared to be a pendant, of some sort. It shone very clearly in the night. Blind knew that humans and most elves couldn't see the spirit of Dragons Breath, so they couldn't tell that the pendant was as bright as a spotlight.

      Or more like a beacon.

Blind scanned the ground to the left of the encampment and saw some very unhappy creatures moving toward the human and elf. Well here's the first test. Lets see this pendant bearer defend himself. And defend he did.

The first lost his head and the rest fell fairly easily, but it was a gutsy move. If the creatures were any smarter he would surely have fell.

Blind sat down and crossed his legs, feeling agitated. This proved nothing. Yes he could handle the sword, but was he really one of the bearers he was supposed to train? Looking up he saw a blast of light hit the elf, and send her flying.

"Ow," Blind said laughing softly to himself, "that's got to hurt."

Then it got interesting. The human held up the pendant and yelled something that was lost in the wind before it reached Blind. At that a bolt of lightning fell from the sky utterly destroying what appeared to be a dragon or something. The human ran over to try to revive the elf.

"Well," Blind said to no one in particular, "this training job could be more fun that I thought." He took off his sword and pack and decided to see what they do next. If they go to the town then he would have to confront them, but until then.

      He could wait.

      He was patient.
