Nightmare's Game

On the Way

"I can't believe you're doing this for me!" Naomi told Raven as they prepared for their night out on the town. Raven had planned this for over a month. He had promised Naomi that their two year anniversary would be special, and had every intention of fulfilling that.

Though it had taken more money than he technically had, Raven managed to get reservations for one of the most expensive restaurants in New York, the 'Valletto Due Mila'. Naomi had been shocked when he told her.

But then again, how could he resist doing something like that for her. She'd mentioned it once to him, but never suspected that he'd actually take her to a famed Italian restaurant like that.

Raven glanced over at Naomi, her emerald eyes shining brightly. He smiled warmly at her and said, "I'd do anything for you; you know that!"

Naomi smiled coyly, "I know..but I don't expect you to." She wrapped her arms around his neck, gazing serenely up at him, "You always treat me right," she added, "That's why I love you!"

Raven replied simply by putting his arms around her waist. After a moment, he told her, "I try." He sighed, taking in her beauty. Naomi was the most beautiful girl Raven had ever met. She was about his height, even though she was almost two years younger than him. Her shoulder-length, wavy, red hair curled under her ears, giving her a strangely child-like appearance.

True, she was youthful, but still, Naomi carried a maturity that was beyond her few years. That was probably because she was practically a genius. She'd probably saved his grades a hundred times with her tutoring.

Raven sighed again and shook his head.

"What?" Naomi questioned. She smiled deeply.

"Nothing," Raven replied, "You're perfect, did you know that?"

She giggled, "Far from it," she replied, "Though I always feel good when I'm with you," She tugged at his collar, "C'mon I'm not going to break, you know," she told him, then absentmindedly blew a strand of hair away from her eyes.

      "Hmmm?" Raven questioned.

"Hold me close, silly!" she replied with a huff, "Like you always do!"

The blond man grinned, "Sorry, I guess I just got lost in those jade eyes of yours."

That was true enough. He loved to look into those eyes. They were so hauntingly beautiful. Perhaps the most beautiful of her many beautiful features.

      Naomi blushed, "Well..."

Before she could go on, Raven pulled the girl close, putting his lips, almost forcefully, on hers. She squealed in surprise, but quickly relaxed and went with the flow.

Retrospection

Never before had Raven experienced a night as perfect as this one. It seemed as though everything had gone right, and nothing could possibly go wrong.

The evening had gone very well, and Raven was almost sorry it had to end. Now it was near midnight, and the roads had begun to empty. Not much disturbed them as they made their way home.

"This was wonderful!" Naomi said, smiling, "Now I remember why I've been in love with you all these years," she laughed.

Raven smiled and joined her in her laughter. He paused a moment later, "Cute," he said dryly, almost deadpan. He really did love her sense of humor. It seemed that she could make an already terrific evening even better just by being there. She was one of the few people that had ever really understood Ravena soul mate of sorts. He couldn't dream of a world without people like her.

"Why thank you," she replied, coyly, "I try!"

"Yes, you are very trying!" he responded, jokingly.

She looked at him and stuck her tongue out, "Well," she said, equally joking, "I guess I know where I stand!"

"Yep! With my arms around you if I'm lucky!"

      Naomi blushed, "Well...maybe."

They both were quiet for a long time, each lost in their own thoughts. Raven turned his attention back to the road.

He yawned. As much as Raven liked to spend time with Naomi, he really couldn't wait to get home. He was tired beyond anything, and just wanted to go to sleep. Just another half hour or so and he'd be there.

Raven's eyes suddenly fell upon something, a small glint of light not far away.

"What the heck?" Raven questioned softly. The boy strained his eyes to try to make it out. There was a dark object of some sort on the road.

"What is it?" Naomi asked, sleepily.

"Not sure" The headlights struck the object...it was another car. It didn't seem to have its lights on. With no small amount of horror, Raven realized that the car was on the wrong side of the roads..heading right for them! Suddenly, the car in front of them switched on its high beams, blinding Raven. He growled, and swerved to try to avoid the vehicle. Raven heard Naomi cry out. Then there was a crunching sound, followed by a sharp jerk. Raven screamed, and everything went black.

"I woke up in a hospital, two months later. The doctors told me that I would be fine, but had been in a coma. Then they told me that Naomi was dead."

"So you see" Raven finished, "It was my fault that it happened. I should have done something."

Emmelyne shook her head, "Raven. What I see was an accident that was not your fault. The other person was at fault."

"Sure. That's what they told me as well. The other driver was drunk. He thought it was a game," he looked down, hiding the tear that escaped him, "I could blame him. After all, he tore my care in two! He crushed the only woman I ever loved; killed her instantly," Raven took a deep breath, "But I could have done something to stop it. I could have taken another road...could have veered right instead of left. There was a lot I could have done."

"You see the past more clearly than you see the present, Raven," The Elvin girl replied, "You couldn't have known at the time."

"I should have. The evening was going far too well. Something had to happen," he shook his head, "It doesn't matter. I'm too tired to care anymore. Wake me when we get there."

With that, Raven laid down, and went to sleep.

Emmelyne sat there in silence for quite awhile. She really didn't know what to do to comfort her new friend. He seemed so intent on blaming himself for something that wasn't his fault in any way. It was just a horrible tragedy.

      She sighed.

The wind began to pick up, carrying with it its whistles and promises for the future. But somewhere beyond it all, Emmelyne could have sworn that she heard another voice. It sounded like an angel crying.
